Victorinox Alox shield variations

Untill about 1999 Victorinox used a plain silver cross as logo on their Alox knives. In 2000 Victorinox changed to a new logo. It’s a curved wappen shield with silver contour with a silver cross in a red area.

Since then Victorinox produces their standard Alox model palette with silver Alox scales with the silver/red shield logo shown in the picture above. A few years ago Victorinox started producing Alox knives in many different colors. Most of these knives are special runs produced in a small quantity. Usually 50 – 100 pieces per run. They are produced mainly for collectors and knife enthusiasts.

The form of the Victorinox logo remains the same, but there are a few color variantions. Most of these special runs have the logo with silver contours and silver cross but the shield inside has the same color as the scales.

A US dealer (*) ordered some limited runs with a logo in the same color as the scales.

In January 2012 Victorinox produced the first time an Alox special run with black scales with the silver logo with red shield. Since then a few other colored Alox knives were produced with the silver logo with red area.

Another variation is a silver knive with a silver logo with grey contours.

In January 2013 Victorinox produced a few Alox models for a US dealer with copper color scales. These knives have a new logo color variation. The shield’s contour and cross have the same copper color as the scales and the shield inside is red.

I’m curious if there will be another shield color variation in the future.

Silver Pioneer USA

A very nice and elegant silver Alox Pioneer from Victorinox. It has not the usual red shield but a silver shield and the contours are a bit darker. It’s the same Victorinox logo as the silver Cadet from April 2012 has.

The main blade carries an etching with lots of “USA” and on the engraving panel on the backside scale a USA flag is printed. It’s a two color print in red and blue.

Because it’s a limited special run of 50 pieces, each knife has a serial number and the year engraved on the backside of the main blade.

A short black lanyard with the black Victorinox logo is attached to the keyring. A nice accessory.

Electrician’s Mate

This brandnew Victorinox Alox knife is a new model with a blade combination, which was never produced before. I call it Electrician’s Mate. It’s basically a First Mate with electrician’s blade instead of the pruning blade or if you like, it’s an Electrician plus with marlinspike instead of the awl.

The knife was produced in two colors. Blue and orange.

The blue shade of the frontscale is pretty like the standard blue shade used for some other Alox models, while the blue color of the backside scale is a bit darker. The difference of the shades is not big, but you can see it.

The blue knife fits into the blue marlinspike serie. The orange one fits into the yellow/orange serie of Electrician models with the black arrow on the back.

This special run includes 50 pieces in blue and 50 pieces in orange and is made by Victorinox in January 2013. Both knives have a serial number engraved. The blue one on the mainblade and the orange one on the Electrician’s blade, exactly like the other knives from the two mentioned series.

Soldier model 1961

Victorinox and Wenger have produced the Soldier model 1961 from 1962 untill 2008. This model is 93mm long and has Alox scales. It was officially issued to the Swiss Army during these years. Victorinox knife is also called “Soldier’s knife”. Wenger’s knife is called “Standard Issue” (SI). Each knife has the year of production stamped on the tang of the backside of the main blade. Untill 1987 each knife carries a WK-stamp on the frontside scale. WK stands for Waffenkontrolle. This is the quality inspection stamp of Swiss Army.
During this long period of time, the knife was changed a few times. Most of the changes concerned the scales.
In this article I describe 5 variants of the model 1961.

Model 1961

Model 1961 started with red Alox scales and was issued between 1962 and 1965.

It has a mainblade, an awl, a cap lifter with screwdriver and wire stripper and a can opener with small screwdriver.

The year stamp on the Victorinox knives is deeper and bold than on the Wenger knives.

Model 1961 Variant 1 (1966 – 77)

From 1966 the scale color changed. They were no longer red, but silver. The main reason was that the anodizing was not very wear resistant. Therefore Swiss Army renounced the red color and the scales were anodized in silver.
During a few years (1965 – about 1975) the soldier was still produced with red scales simultaneously with the silver one. Probably because the two companies had red scales on stock and didn’t want to waste the material.

Model 1961 Variant 2 (1972 – 1977)

1972 the W-K stamp was rotated 90° to the right. The reason is unknown.

1976 (maybe 1975) Victorinox changed the tang stamp from ELSENER SCHWYZ VICTORIA to VICTORINOX SWITZERLAND STAINLESS ROSTFREI

Model 1961 Variant 3 (1977 – 1987)

Between 1977 and 1987 new scales with a red shield and Swiss cross were used. The W-K stamp was placed at the bottom of the knife above the hollow rivet into a quadratic spot.

Model 1961 Variant 4 (1987 – 1993)

In 1987 Swiss Army decided that it was no longer required to put a W-K stamp on each knife. After Victorinox and Wenger delivered so many years high quality knives, Swiss Army stopped quality inspections. Victorinox and Wenger than produced new scales without the spot for the W-K stamp.

During some years (1987 – about 1990) both companies still used their old stock Alox scales with the W-K spot for the soldier knife simultaneously with the new scales. These knives did not longer have the W-K stamp, but a blank spot.

Over the years Wenger produced knives with a bail attached to the hollow rivet. But these knives were not issued to the Swiss Army, they were produced for the privat market only.

Model 1961 Variant 5 (1993 – 2008)

From 1993 Victorinox replaced the hollow rivet with a usual rivet like the other two rivets. The cap lifter became a notch to bend wire and the wire stripper was eliminated.

2008 Victorinox and Wenger produced the last soldiers model 1961.

Wenger continued with the production of this model untill 2013, but without year stamp on the tang. It was sold to the privat market only.

2008 Victorinox started with the production of the new Soldier model 2009. This new Soldier is no longer an Alox 93mm model, but a modern 111mm knife.
Wenger is no longer a supplier for the soldier’s knife to the Swiss Army.
